July:
Emily- Gravity Falls. Yes, Gravity Falls is an animated show on the Disney Channel. Yes, I am ten years old. But in all honesty, this hilarious (and expertly animated) show about a quirky brother sister duo living with their crotchety old uncle in the mysterious and magical Gravity Falls, Oregon is more clever than anyone could have ever imagined. With nods to classic movies and television shows like The Breakfast Club and Twin Peaks, there's no going wrong with this show.
Alex- Wilfred. Elijah Wood, a man in a dog suit (with an Australian accent), midlife crisis. I'd say that Wilfred has everything I want out of a television show. Elijah Wood (who we know from The Lord of the Rings trilogy) plays his character even better than he played Frodo. As Ryan, crushed by the woes of the world and overcome with the spirit of Modernity, Ryan begins the series writing a suicide note (after many drafts), attempting suicide (after many tries) yet still being unsuccessful at all of them. Though I was shocked to find a comedy show starting out with such a dark subject, I found myself laughing out loud at Ryan's failures, for it just adds to his character...which will quickly change. The day after his suicide, Ryan meet's Wilfred, his neighbor Jenna's dog (of a mysterious breed), who Ryan--and only Ryan--sees as a man dressed in a dog suit.
June:
Alex- Talking Heads. Graduating from art school, David Byrne (lead singer/guitarist of the Talking Heads) used his creativity and innovation to put together a band whose work would turn out to be so good that it shaped the entire decade of 80s music. These dudes (and lady) have a unique sound that is envied by so many other artists. Though many try to emulate, I have yet to find a band that has mastered the uniquely-awesome-geekiness of the Talking Heads. Not only do they have a phenomenal sound, but their music videos are pieces of art. Just go check them out now. My favorite tracks are Once In a Lifetime and This Must Be the Place.
May:
Alex- Elaine Benes. As Seinfeld remains comedic gold in the hearts of all television fanatics, I have developed a recent fascination with the greatness of Elaine Benes. Jerry's sassy and quirky best friend embodies the dream of the 90s with her blazers, socks and saddle shoes, and long floral skirts. If I could, I would be Elaine Benes. She makes it okay to have long, curly hair that's out of control. In fact, she makes it look hot. I love Elaine.
Emily- Record Stores. So recently for school-related things I've had to travel out to areas of the city of Boston that I wouldn't normally go to. Because of this, I've stumbled upon many one-of-a-kind small businesses, one type of store being the record. While this may vary by location, record stores are wonderful hidden gems because not only will they have records for dirt cheap (my current favorite, In Your Ear, on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston, MA have records for as low as $1.) but they will also often have other types of music for really cheap too. This could be CDs or cassette tapes or pretty much whatever you can think of. The best part is that every music or record store is a little different. It's as if each store has their own story to tell. And usually it will be told by the owner who has been through a lot of music in his or her lifetime and will be glad to share their music with you. So go out of your comfort zone! Explore your hometown! Who knows what cool areas you might stumble upon?
April:
Emily- New York City. While I love Boston with all of my heart, there's just something about New York City that makes it one of the best places in the world. I recently spent my Spring Break in this grand city and regretted having to leave. While their streets are smelly and everything is overpriced, the amount of art, culture, and famous people I encountered in just a week from staying there was unparalleled. For me, New York is an inspiring place. Even when you think you've seen it all, there's more to be seen. If you have never been to New York City before, I recommend going at least once. Even just walking on the streets and staring at everything that's around you is inspiring!
Sarah- Pancakes the bunny. I just recently acquired this bunny, right in time for Easter. However, this is more than just a rabbit. Pancakes is a small, fluffy dream come true for me. This battle of the bunny has been going on between my mother and me for approximately three years now, and last Friday night, victory was mine! I named this little guy Pancakes, and he's going to make these remaining weeks at school where I will be without him seem unbearable for me. Just look at those ears!
Alex- 'Under Pressure.' In the greatest collaboration since Lennon/McCartney, two goddesses of music, Freddie Mercury and David Bowie, team up to create a power anthem that begs us to 'give love one more chance.' This song is great because it's about a universal experience-- feeling the pressures of the world and desiring to make it better. Whether we want to make 'Under Pressure' about hardened youth on the city streets, trying to make it in a wasteland of a world, or the troubles of growing up, the power of 'Under Pressure' made this song a classic before it even went off the top 40 charts. Listen to it here.
